We have decided to switch our older boys' bedroom with the office. We looked up our list of reasons to do it and our reasons against it and decided it was time.

Reasons to switch:
1. Theater room above the boys' current room means no movies after boys go to bed
2. Not enough room in the office to have office, filing, computer parts AND craft stuff so it's all scattered around house.
3. Not enough room means I usually craft in living room and it gets messy fast.
4. Boys' door is glass paneled and not great for privacy or letting them sleep, even with curtains. (It was originally built to be a formal dining room but, since my "breakfast nook" fits a table for 10 and the bar counter next to it seats 6, it seemed silly to have yet another large seating area.) Also, the glass panels make their mess known to anyone visiting (above picture).
5. The boys want to watch cable, but their room doesn't have a jack.
6. The boys' room is near the kitchen and in between the family and living rooms which makes it hard for them to sleep when we have adult company.
Reasons not to:
1. The current office has an attached bathroom and the boys are 8 and 10.
2. The window offers prime sneaking out location when the boys get older
3. We'll have to repaint both rooms again and we just did them within the last 6 months.
4. The boys' room does not have a network jack for the computers.
5. The boys' room does not have a mount for a ceiling fan, only recessed lighting.
So, we decided the pros finally outweighed the cons. The boys are going to learn how to clean their bathroom as they are old enough to handle that. The window sneak out location I'll address in a couple more years as needed. I like painting so it's not a huge deal to do that again. We are adding a network jack and a light to the room so that is solved as well.

I took pictures as the house was being built so we can go back and look at the internal structures of our walls and see what we have to work with. Adding a network jack to the new office is a little tricky because in between that room and the main networking center of the house there are a couple of firewall breaks. Obviously we can't drill through those as it would compromise them so we had to come up with something else. In the theater room above the new office there is a network port already so we are going to install a switch up there and then run a line from that room to the room below it. However, one of the big headers that I can't touch is directly below that jack so the new jack couldn't be next to it which would have looked better. But, see that tiny wall on the left that changes angle? THAT doesn't have the header below it. So from there we could drill down and run the line through the ceiling to the new room. The line upstairs is covered by the curtain and shelf and the downstairs line drops in right at the computers.
This is the ceiling of the boys' room. To fish the line through several feet of ceiling we attached a hook to the end of the extendable paintroller handle. That way we didn't have to buy any new tools and could use what we already had. The line you see above is not live, btw. It's for a hot tub plug but we don't have a hot tub so we turned the breaker off.

Our To Do list:
-
Run network line to office-Add light to ceiling in office
-Paint office gray and ceiling white
-Paint boys' room navy blue (they want to keep the color they have now) with white stripes
-Add trim to door of office (we installed the door 3 years ago and never trimmed it, oops)
-Add shelves above beds in boys' room for treasures
-Add bedside lamps to the boys' room
-Hang window blinds in office
-Hang curtains in boys' room
-Move all the furniture/stuff between rooms
-Bring the filing organizer down from the master closet to the office
-Bring the crafting supplies down from the master bedroom to the office
